Paul David Schulte, age 70, of Portage, Michigan, passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2011, with loving family at his side.  David was born on January 10, 1941, the first child of Paul H. and Carol A. (Iverson) Schulte, in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

David graduated from Eastern High School, in Lansing, Michigan and spent most of his adult years as a resident of Kalamazoo and Portage, Michigan.  He was an avid short wave radio hobbyist, and had a remarkable memory for call letters and frequencies of hundreds of radio stations around the world.  He could easily pick up and listen to radio stations across the globe, and kept extensive journals of his findings.  He loved his family and friends, and always had a polite, cheerful greeting for all those he knew.  He was especially fond of family pets, including his sister’s dogs and cat.

In later years, when David lived in Portage, he had a special affection for his caregivers at Interact of Michigan, most notably Christina Mack.  He also cared very much for his “family” at the Cliffwood House in Portage, where he lived until his death.  He frequently expressed appreciation for people who helped him throughout the years in Kalamazoo, and especially loved Holly and Randy Ramsdell, who frequently celebrated birthdays and special events with him and his family.

David is survived by two brothers, Lawrence M. Schulte, of Stoughton, Wisconsin, and Eric F. Schulte (Tippy) of Santa Barbara, California, and one sister, Karen E. Veenendaal (Mark) of Okemos, Michigan.  Also surviving are niece Laura L. Veenendaal (Matt Riedemann) and great-niece Maya Riedemann, of Rochester, Minnesota, and nephew Scott G. Schulte, of Santa Barbara, California, Uncle Paul and Aunt Sharon Iverson, of Houghton Lake, Michigan and many beloved cousins.

A memorial gathering is being planned at Cliffwood House, 127 Cliffwood Avenue, Portage, Michigan on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at 12:00 PM.  A graveside memorial service will follow on Thursday, June 30, at 2:00PM at Washtenong Memorial Park, 3771 Whitmore Lake Road; Ann Arbor, Michigan 48105.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions would be appreciated to Interact of Michigan, 610 S. Burdick Street, Kalamazoo, Michigan 49007 or Community Living Options, Activity Fund, 626 Reed Street, Kalamazoo, Michigan 49001.
