Carl Gligor Pogoncheff

Carl PogoncheffThe last owner of the Washington Grill/Washington Foods, passed away June 19, 2011, at the age of 86.  He was born May 17, 1925, in Lansing.  Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Olga; parents, Gligor and Yanna; brothers, Blagoy and Christ; sisters-in-law, Mary and Ruth Pogoncheff.

He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army, receiving the Purple Heart in the battle of Anzio.  Carl enjoyed life simply, accepting all of life’s twists of fate unceremoniously.  He enjoyed gardening and was a master grower of peppers, which skills he passed on to his grandchildren.

Surviving are:  2 sons, Dr. Metodi (Marcia) Pogoncheff of Grand Ledge and Nicholas (Brynne) Pogoncheff of California; 5 grandchildren, Dr. Carl Pogoncheff, Dr. John Pogoncheff, Anna Pogoncheff, Damon Pogoncheff, and Galen Pogoncheff.

The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1701 E. Saginaw St., Lansing, with Fr. Mark Sietsema, Ph.D., officiating.  Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, with a Trisagion Service at 7:00 p.m.
