Goldie Heos

Goldie HeosGoldie Spiropoulos Heos was born April 15, 1920, in Chicago to Greek immigrant parents, George and Garifalia (Kallis) Spiropoulos. In 1925, the family moved to Greektown Detroit and Goldie graduated from Northwestern High School in 1937, then worked in military manufacturing during World War II.  As part of the Greatest Generation, she experienced 95 exceptional years with her focus on her family and community.  She was a nurturing and kind woman.

In 1946, she married Tom Heos, making their home in Flint, where they raised their family. Goldie was a tireless worker for the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Flint where she taught Sunday School and Greek School.  Her life was focused around the Hellenic community, church, and extended family. Goldie fulfilled a life’s dream as a teacher’s aide for the Carmen-Ainsworth schools in Flint, working with elementary age children with disabilities. Goldie and Tom moved to East Lansing in 1984 to be close to their grandchildren for whom she provided loving care throughout their school years.  She personified a “Super Yiayia.”

She is survived by her children, James Thomas (Cassandra) Heos and Pamela Heos (Jeffery Brancheau); grandchildren, Matthew (Marina) and Christopher (Becky) Heos, Kelly Heos (Anthony) Samson and CristiEllen Heos Zarvas; five great-grandchildren; and sixteen nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and 3 older sisters.

The Heos family expresses its gratitude to MediLodge of Okemos for the tender care they provided. We also recognize the years of personal care from her doctors.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 10, 2016, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1701 E. Saginaw St., Lansing.  The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, with a Trisagion service at 7:30 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, or to Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Grand Blanc.
