Charles R. “Chuck” Morscheck Sr., age 91, passed away January 7, 2011, at Helen Joy Newberry Hospital in Newberry, Mich. He was born May 27, 1919, in St. Paul, Minn. He attended the University of Minnesota and the St. Paul College of Law. He was a goalie on the University of Minnesota ice hockey team and on the St. Paul Insurance Company‚Äôs team in the Industrial League.

Chuck married his high school sweetheart, Carol Lee Sterner, in April 1942. He served four years in World War II rising to the rank of captain in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He also served in the Army Reserve until 1953.

In civilian life, he worked as an insurance field representative for the St. Paul Insurance Co. and as an agent for Mourer-Foster Inc. of Lansing, the Lyman and Sheets Agency of Lansing, the Foremost Insurance Co. and Gilbert R.V. Insurance of Orlando, Fla. His insurance career encompassed 55 years.

He was president of the Lansing Association of Insurance Agents and director of associated risk managers. He also was president of the Greater Lansing Amateur Hockey Association and president of the Downtown Lansing Optimist Club. He was a member of the MSU Downtown Coaches Club and the MSU Blue Line Club, and was a member of University Lutheran Church in East Lansing.

He was international president of the Foretravel Motorcade Club, president of the Michigan Chapter of Foretravel Motorcade Club, president of the Michigan Knights Chapter of the Family Motor Coach Association, national committeeman of the Family Motor Coach Association, member of the Good Sam RV Club and member of Escapees RV Club.

Chuck was preceded in death by Carol, his loving and devoted wife of 63 years, and is survived by children Charles Jr. (Peggy), Carolee (Jon) Sanford, William (Vicki), Richard (Patricia), and Melissa (Phillip) Hagerty, 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at University Lutheran Church, 1020 S. Harrison Road, East Lansing at 3:00 p.m., Friday, March 25, 2011 with the Rev. Martin Halom officiating. Inurnment will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, Mich. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

    To the family of Charles Morscheck:

    While my grandmother was residing at the Helen Newberry Joy Hospital Long Term Facility, I had the opportunity, along with my two daughters, to meet Mr. Morscheck. Being an alumni of the University of Minnesota (1991), me and “Charlie” hit it off immediately. I would always wear University of Minnesota clothing when I went to visit and we spoke quite often about U of MN and the current events taking place in athletics, including hockey, where he told me stories of this days playing goalie in the late 30′s. I find the irony quite amazing, that we met by coincidence, and will never forget his smile and laugh.
