Evans W. Brown

Holt, Michigan.

Age 83, passed away February 12, 2015.  He was born in Pontiac, MI, June 11, 1931, son of the late Mabel and Ward Brown.  Evans attended and graduated from the Pontiac Schools and was a diver on the swim team for 4 years.  Evans graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology of Chicago on a two-year insurance scholarship.

He served from 1952-1956 in the Air Force at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. and at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, AK.  While in Anchorage, Evans competed in a worldwide Air Force swimming and diving championship at Sampson AFB in New York and marched in the Eisenhower inauguration parade in Washington, D.C.  While in the Air Force, Evans was a lifeguard and taught swimming at both bases.  He also joined the Arctic Valley Ski Club and learned to ski while in Anchorage.  Evans reached the rank of staff sergeant prior to his honorable discharge from military service.      Evans served as “camp cook” for 35 years at hunting camp north of Clare and was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Holt where he served as an Elder. He also enjoyed hosting, alongside his wife Peggy, annual pre-holiday parties at the Lansing City Club and the University Club.  Evans served as president for the Kiwanis Club of Holt in 1966.  He took on the duties of Most Loyal Gander of the Blue Goose from 1972-1973, and received his Life Membership on May 23, 1996.

Evans began his career as a marketing representative for the Springfield Fire Marine Company.  The next career choice was to work for the Aetna Insurance Company.  After receiving a training session in Hartford, CT, he was sent into the field in Lansing, becoming manager of the Lansing office.  After several years, he bought into the Trager-Berney Insurance Agency, eventually owning it.  After selling the agency, Evans finished his career at the Lansing Insurance Agency, retiring at the age of 62.

He was a member of the American Association of Insurance Management Consultants (A.A.I.M.C.O.) during 1985-1986.   In his chosen field of Property Casualty Insurance, he was asked to give presentations in the area of marketing and sales at insurance conferences throughout the United States.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Peggy A. Brown of Holt, whom he met at Pontiac Junior High School, and their daughter, Michele Brown-Groshke of Montgomery, TX.

There will be a celebration of both Evans and Peggy’s lives held late in 2015. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Capital Area Humane Society. Arrangements are by the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel.
