Beverly L. Champion

Age 94, of East Lansing, MI, died September 11, 2014, in Lansing, Michigan. Beverly was born at home in Oak Park, Illinois. After high school she attended the University of Chicago and received her geology degree. Her first job was at Richfield Oil in Bakersfield, California. There she met her husband, Lloyd Reginald Champion, who was in the Army Air Corps. They married in 1945. They then lived in Wisconsin for two years while Lloyd finished his Ph.D. in genetics. Then they moved to Michigan where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Beverly took a position with the Michigan DNR and worked as a geologist until she retired in 1983.

Beverly and Lloyd “Champ” spent many summers enjoying their large garden and selling vegetables. They loved fishing on Lake Michigan on their boat “Sea Deucer” and spending time on Lake Cut Foot Sioux in northern Minnesota. Her passions were playing her organ, fishing and enjoying wildlife.

Beverly was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd, in 2004; one brother, Somers Smith; and a sister, Muriel Nack. Surviving are her son, Reginald Bruce (Barbara) Champion; two sisters, Carol (Lloyd) Soley and Shirley Anderton; four grandchildren, Cara (Frederick) Gruber, Justin Champion, Amy (Craig) McLeod and Ashley Ames; and six great-grandchildren, Keely McLeod, Teegan McLeod, Ellianna Gruber, Adalynn Ames, Frederick Hans Gruber and Greta Gruber.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2014, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with Pastor Sam Perry officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society – Michigan Chapter.
