Gene graduated from Sexton High School and went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Army. He retired after 42 years from the U.S. Postal Service; he delivered the mail in the Lansing area. He enjoyed many activities including cross-country skiing, hiking the North Country Trail, biking the rail trails, Big Band music, and going to concerts. Mr. and Mrs. Briggs travelled the United States together. Gene was a pie connoisseur and just couldn’t pass up a good slice of pie.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Mary Frances (Austin) Briggs; children, Barbara (Kim) Seymour, Donald (Kerry Kendall) Briggs, Kathy (Tim) Jones, Jody Goodwin, Randy (Robin Story) Briggs, Patty Stowe, and Mary (Jim) Couling; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Roberta Dugan and Vernagene Brandell; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law Raymond Brandell.
A memorial service will be held on June 15, 2014. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery in Lansing. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rails-to-Trails Conservancy or The Presbyterian Church of Traverse City. Arrangements are by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.
