Glykeria Christofilis

Age 61, of Holt, MI, passed away July 3, 2013.  After a courageous yearlong battle with cancer, Glykeria Christofilis fell asleep in the arms of the Lord.  She was born on April 10, 1952 in Ano Yianneika, Greece to Nikolaos and Eleni Vlantonopoulos.  In 1975 she married John Christofilis and soon thereafter the couple made their permanent home in Holt, Michigan.  Together, Glykeria and John raised three loving daughters and built a business, the Delhi Café, which they have owned and operated since 1992.  Glykeria’s greatest joy was anything that involved spending time with her family, particularly her three grandchildren, the oldest of whom is named after her. Yia Yia (Greek for “grandma”) loved to make Greek pastries, crochet and give to her family and community.  She was very strong in her faith and was an active member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church where she worked with Philoptochos, taught Sunday School and volunteered for many church functions and fundraisers.  Her love for advancing Greek cultural awareness dates back to the grade school days of her daughters when she gave classroom presentations while wearing old traditional Greek attire.  Glykeria was a devoted wife, a loving mother and a generous person who touched many lives and who loved helping others.  May her memory be eternal.

She is survived by her husband of 38 years, John; 3 daughters, Christina (John) Economopoulos of Escanaba, MI; Elaine and Demetra Christofilis, both of Holt; 3 grandchildren, Glykeria, Harekleia and Christos Economopoulos; 2 sisters, Konstadina (George) Bouras and Georgia (Antonios) Diamandopoulos, all of Greece.  She is also survived by more beloved family, many dear friends and koumbaroi.  She was preceded in death by: her parents; brother, Ioannis Vlantonopoulos; and niece, Elenitsa Bouras.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 6, 2013, at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1701 E. Saginaw St., Lansing, with Fr. Mark Sietsema, Ph.D., officiating.  Interment will follow at the Maple Ridge Cemetery in Holt.  The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel, in Holt, on Friday, July 5, 2013, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with a Trisagion service at 7:30 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in memory of Glykeria Christofilis.

John and family,
I was very sad to see in the paper that Glykeria had passed away! I feel she was part of my family. The wreath that she made for us still hangs on my door every Christmas season. She will definitely be remembered for her generous nature. May Jesus comfort you all.
Love, Sylvia

Glykeria treated us like a member of the family. She consoled my wife personally when Nancy’s mother passed. We loved her. We hope her daughters can take some comfort in knowing they possess a lot of Glykeria’s character. God bless the family.
