Jack Shanker

  Jack passed away peacefully on February 4, 2013 at the age of 94. He was of East Lansing, MI. He was preceded in death by his father Louis and mother Sarah. He is survived by his loving wife Ida, a sister Nancy Bee, his sons Larry (Margie), James (Susan), and his daughter Sally Ann Frohnapfel (Chuck). Jack has seven grandchildren, Todd (Debra), Randall (Melissa), Scott (Tamara), Michael (Tracy), Kenny Shanker and Brett (Katie) and Kara Grossman. He also has 12 great-grandchildren.

Jack served valiantly in WW2, earning two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. He was a past president of Canada Dry Bottling of Lansing and proudly passed the family business legacy on to his son and grandson. Jack was an Officer of the Michigan Soft Drink Association.  In his business, as in all aspects of his life, Jack operated with dedication, honesty and integrity. He was a man of great character; a bright, kind and generous person, with a good sense of humor.

Jack served as a past president of the Jewish Welfare Federation of Lansing and has been a member since his youth of Congregation Shaarey Zedek.  He has been a member of Walnut Hills Country Club since 1955. Jack and Ida enjoyed golf well into their 90’s. Jack was very proud when he shot his age at 83.

Jack and Ida were a beautiful, loving couple, happily married over 72 years. Jack was always so proud of the future generations of his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.   Jack cared deeply for his wife and family and was an unusually loyal friend. His family and friends, from Lansing area and New Port Richey, Florida, have many wonderful memories of Jack.

The funeral service will be held at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, 1924 Coolidge Rd., East Lansing on Friday, February 8, 2013 at 11:00 a.m.
